Parks and Recreation : Message to Patrons

The City of Shelby Parks and Recreation Department has prided itself on providing public recreation to the citizens of Shelby and Cleveland County for over six decades. Studies show that quality of life issues are very important to people; and lively programs and events can have a major impact on community economic development. Therefore, it is our goal to honor this mission statement:

"To provide a variety of quality leisure services in a clean, safe environment for citizens of all ages".

As we recall the memories and salute the history of Shelby Parks and Recreation, it is equally important to look in to the future as demand for parks and recreation programs and facilities have increased significantly in recent years. In fact, Shelby City Park alone has over 800,000 visitors annually and was awarded the first ever Travel & Tourism Award by the Cleveland County Chamber for 2010.

The City of Shelby understands this challenge and has adopted a 10-year comprehensive master-plan to address future recreational needs. In 2011 the new Recreation and Sports Complex was dedicated at City Park that includes 3 championship baseball/softball fields, playground, shelter, walking paths and horeshoe pits. This new facility will greatly enhance the City's youth programs with over 1,000 participants and be a major draw for state and regional tournaments.

Our staff of 19 full time, 26 part time and 60 summer seasonal employees are dedicated professionals that understand the importance of offering structured programs that meet the needs and desires of our patrons. They also understand the value of maintaining some of the finest recreational venues in the state. Combining these two philosophies is the recipe for outstanding recreational and leisure services.

Whether you are looking for a place to hold small event, a dinner banquet for several hundred, or a corporate picnic for thousands - Shelby Parks and Recreation is the place to be.
