Recent Shelby Appearance Award Winners!

 

Gaye DeVoe (L) and Allison Gragg (R) presented the "Effie Murphy Wallace Residential Award" to Randy Skelton, (C), who lives at 208 Cleveland Ave. The Skelton home was chosen for the award by the Shelby Appearance Commission, because their beautiful yard enhances the appearance of the neighborhood, improves the landscaping and appearance of the property and enhances and improves the natural environment.

 

 

Salon 206 located at 206 South Washington Street was presented the commercial Shelby Appearance Award by the Shelby Appearance Commission.From L-R: Allison Gragg (USA), Salon 206 Staff, and Carole Arey (Chair of Shelby Appearance Commission). Salon 206 received the award, because the Commission felt their business enhances the appearance of the neighborhood; improves the building, landscaping and appearance of the property; and rehabilitates and preserves an historic business.

 

OTHER NEWS....

 The North Carolina Department of Transportation has awarded the City of Shelby a $50,000 SafeRoutes to School Non-Infrastructure Grant. Safe Routes to School is a federal program that encourages elementary and middle school aged chidlren to walk and bicycle to school as a healthy transportation alternative. And, by motivating students to walk or bike to class, we can reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality and enhance safety. HOW DO YOU MAKE A NOMINATION FOR THE COMMERCIAL OR RESIDENTIAL SHELBY APPEARANCE AWARD? Contact our Planning Services Department at 704-484-6829 or email your nomination to mary.byrnes@cityofshelby.com with the property address of your Commercial or Residential nomination. Your nomination will be presented at the next Shelby Appearance Commission meeting for consideration by the Commission.

WHAT DOES THE PLANNING SERVICES DEPARTMENT DO?  The Planning Services Department handles a wide variety of long-range and day-to-day growth management, land use, zoning, and development review functions. Responsibilities include: coordinating the permit and subdivision review process; administering the Unified Development Ordinance and various adopted plans, providing support to the Planning & Zoning Board, Zoning Board of Adjustment, City Council and various council appointed committees regarding planning related issues; preparing a variety of plans and analysis tools to assist the City with planning initiatives. Code Enforcement is also part of our responsibilities, which include Nuisance Abatement and Junk Car issues.
