Shelby operates its own electric distribution system with four substations containing a total of 15 circuits and 152 miles of lines. Shelby also has five peak shaving generators that are used to reduce power costs during peak times. Shelby has a capacity of 65 Mw with a system peak in 2011 of 46 Mw.
The City is also a member of North Carolina Municipal Power Agency 1, which provides power from the Catawba Nuclear Facility. This association provides Shelby with an abundance of base load generation. NCMPA1 is a 75% owner of Reactor No. 2.

Electric Safety
Shelby's Electric Department consists of 10 employees with 70+ years of combined experience providing service to over 7,700 customers.
The Electric Department has an outstanding safety record. The department has earned the American Public Power Association’s (APPA) Electric Utility Safety Award for safe operating practices. APPA is the national organization representing more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community and state-owned electric utilities.

(15,000-29,999 worker-hours of annual worker exposure) for 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2015, 2018, and 2020
*Category C (30,000-59,999 worker-hours of annual worker exposure) for 2016
The Electric Department has also won the Annual Municipal Electric Safety Award from ElectriCities of North Carolina for no lost time accidents 13 years in a row, 1999-2012 as well as 2014-2019.

The City of Shelby Electric Department is an Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) designated utility. American Public Power Association's RP3 program acknowledges public power utilities who provide outstanding service and demonstrate their commitment to provide safe and reliable power to the community.

*Platinum Designation: 2007-2008, 2009-2010, 2011-2012, 2015-2018, 2021-2024
*Gold Designation: 2013-2015, 2024-2027
