Staff members in the Fire & Rescue Department must maintain core basic certifications as firefighters, EMT's, hazardous materials responders, rescue technicians, and aircraft rescue firefighters.  In addition to core certifications, staff members typically hold additional certification (depending on specific job title) such as officer, apparatus operator, or life safety educator.  Public safety certification and training in North Carolina is credentialed and administered by the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM), or the Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS).  The community college system is tasked with program delivery, and certification programs are credentialed through the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).  The Office of Professional Development & Logistics administers the Fire & Rescue Department's training and continuing education programs, and coordinates staff credentialing and certifications.
