The Fire & Rescue Department enforces the fire code within the North Carolina State Building Code as empowered by the North Carolina Legislature.  Staff members from the Fire Marshal's Office and the Operations Division conduct compliance and enforcement inspections of occupancies in the city and in a one mile extra-territorial jurisdiction.  The Fire & Rescue Department maintains an annual schedule for fire and life safety compliance inspections in all occupancy classifications.   The Fire Marshal's Office staff conduct technical review of building and site plans for new and existing construction projects in conjunction with Shelby Planning & Development Department staff.
