The assistant fire chief provides general oversight of the Fire & Rescue Departments' emergency operations and personnel management and provides executive support for financial accounting and strategic planning in the Fire & Rescue Department.

David Vanhoy has been with the Fire & Rescue Department since 2000.  He holds numerous professional fire and rescue certifications and is a Level III Code Enforcement Officer.  He serves as a peer assessor for Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) in the agency accreditation program.  David earned his graduate degree from Grand Canyon University and his undergraduate degree from Western Carolina University.  David is a graduate of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program, and the County & Municipal Administration program at the Knapp-Sanders School of Government at UNC-Chapel Hill.   In 2013, he was awarded the Fire & Rescue Department's Medal of Valor (the departments second highest award) for the rescue of a child from a structure fire, and was also  recognized as the North Carolina State Firefighters Association (NCSFA) firefighter of the year.  David is a credentialed Chief Fire Officer (CFO) through CPSE and has held the designation since 2017.
