Webb Memorial Lawns was most likely established as a burying ground for the African American community in the mid-1940s. The Gardner family was instrumental in beautifying the cemetery throughout the 1940s. It is still active today and holds the remains of some of the community’s most distinguished African American citizens. Among those buried at Webb Memorial Lawns includes: Rev. Samuel Raper, Ezra Bridges, and Clarence Palmer among many others.
There is also a large number of veterans interred there from every major conflict from WWI to present. One particularly notable veteran was Sgt. Jerry Donald Carter who was killed in action in 1966. He was the second Cleveland County citizen to be killed in the Vietnam conflict and his appears on the Vietnam Memorial in Uptown Shelby alongside of another individual interred at Webb Memorial Lawns LCpl Joe Louis Lockhart McGill.
