The City of Shelby and the Shelby Police Department are proud to offer the Are You O.K. program. This program is designed for older adults, disabled persons, shut-in's who live alone, or anyone in our community who needs to be checked on daily. There is no charge for this service.
Are You O.K. is a computerized telephone calling system which is operated free of charge by the Shelby Police Department. The system calls each enrolled subscriber every day of the year at the same time of day.
Are You O.K. calls will be made in the morning between 7:00a.m. and 9:00a.m. Each subscriber will be asked to choose an hour during which he or she prefers to be called. The calls will always be made in the same order, so people will quickly learn exactly when to expect them.
When the subscriber picks up the phone he or she will hear a voice saying, "Good morning, are you okay?" If the subscriber fails to answer the phone after several tries, or if there is a busy signal several times in a row, the computer immediately notifies a 9-1-1 Telecommunicator who will then send a patrol unit to check on the person. During holidays, vacations, or any other time the subscriber plans to be away, a simple call to the Police Department will stop the calls for as long as needed.
If you have any questions or would like more information concerning this service, please call the Shelby Police Department at 704.484.6845.
