We are Stronger together!

We at the Shelby Police Dept. continue to look for ways to maximize the safety and comfort of the residents, communities, and businesses of Shelby N.C.  Surveillance systems have a huge role in this initiative and we at the Shelby Police Dept. are asking all City of Shelby residents and business owners to share external camera locations as part of our Community Surveillance Outreach program in a collaborative effort to minimize opportunity for criminals.

Criminals are opportunistic; taking advantage of circumstances that will allow them to go undetected as they victimize others. When others fall victim to the criminal activity; we investigate. This includes looking for surveillance systems in the immediate area that possibly caught the crime in progress.  We need your help!

Residents and businesses have surveillance systems throughout the City of Shelby. When a crime occurs, some may not even know they have the incident on camera.  Knowing the location of each surveillance system would assist us (Shelby PD) during investigations and court proceedings. Surveillance footage has substantial evidentiary value and supplements our existing evidence with visual confirmation.  Please take into consideration:
  • We are not asking for direct access to your camera system. Knowing the location of each external camera will aid in quickly identifying active systems in impacted areas. Should we need access to specific footage we would ask for assistance in securing it.
  • Your camera information is strictly confidential and will not be disclosed unless ordered by a court order or other legal process.
  • This is voluntary only; a team effort to maximize resident, community, and business safety.
  • There is no cost or fees to participate.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will my information be disseminated?
Information will be stored in our computer database.  Should a crime occur; this data base will be utilized by police officers to quickly identify camera locations. Not accessible to the public. The only time we would have to give information is if disclosure is court ordered or ordered through other legal process.

What happens if my camera captures something?
If your camera captures needed footage of a crime or suspicious activity; someone from the Shelby Police Department will call you and request your assistance in viewing and obtaining the footage.

How do I register my camera and location?
There are two ways to register:
