Prior to employment, a perspective officer must have completed the North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training Class. The Basic Law Enforcement Training class consists of 616 hours of training in 36 topics related to law enforcement which is mandated by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission.

The scheduled training for the Shelby Police Department is overseen by the Professional Standards Division.

New officers are assigned a Field Training Officer (FTO) that will provide on the job training for a minimum training period of 12 weeks.

The Shelby Police Department has 5 FTOs in the Patrol Division to provide this training.

All officers of the Shelby Police Department attend a minimum of approximately 30 hours of in-service training per year.

The Shelby Police Department has 14 North Carolina Certified instructors that provide training to the officers on general topics of the state mandated training. The Shelby Police Department also has North Carolina Certified Specific Instructors for Firearms, Subject Control an Arrest Techniques, Hazardous Materials, Driving and Rapid Response (Active Shooter). Additional instructors also provide training in CPR, ASP Baton, Taser, Chemical Munitions, and Specialty Impact Weapons.
