The City of Shelby Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) Program is designed to minimize grease discharged into the sanitary sewer collection system. An increasingly common cause for sanitary sewer overflows is sewer pipes blocked by grease. Grease gets into the sewer from household drains as well as from poorly maintained grease traps in food service establishments. Sewer overflows and backups can cause health hazards, damage home/business interiors and threaten the environment.
Grease is a byproduct of cooking from meat fats, lard, oils, shortening, butter, margarine, food scraps, baked goods, sauces and diary products. When washed down the sink, grease sticks to the insides of sewer pipes (both on your property and under the street). Over time, it can build up and block entire portions of your home or business plumbing system.
The easiest way to solve the grease problem is to keep fats, oils and grease out of the sewer system by:
- Never pour grease down sink drains
- Scrape grease and food scraps from plates, pots, pans, utensils into a can or trash for disposal
- Do not pour grease down garbage disposals
- Use strainers in sink drains to catch food scraps and empty in the trash for disposal
- Do not flush grease with hot water; this just moves the problem further down the line
